Much has been made about Ben Barnes politician and Ben Barnes the Lt. Governor of Texas. Unfortunately very little has been said about Ben Barnes Politician the philanthropist or Ben Barnes the volunteer. Even when he was in office Barnes was a champion for equality and financial assistance for the less fortunate.
He raised wages for labor, created a minimum wage for farmers, raised teacher salaries, increased higher education spending 300 percent and even created the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation.
Since departing from office Barnes has more time to devote to charities and volunteer work. He is currently the Council Advisor for the Texas Civil Rights Project which promotes racial, social, and economic justice through education and litigation.
Barnes volunteers his time with the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the Democratic Majority Trust.
At present time the former politician is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area. Financially Ben Barnes Politician is a contributor to the People’s Community Clinic in Austin, TX, the LBJ Library and School of Public Affairs, the Huntington Art Gallery and the Longhorn Foundation.
